The molecule itself

Hydrogen is the smallest molecule in existence, odourless, colourless and chemically unreactive at room temperature. It is not an irritant and it is not toxic. Gut bacteria produce it as a normal part of digestion, so exposure to endogenous hydrogen is not novel to the body.

None of that is a health claim. It is simply the reason the safety conversation about consumer hydrogen devices is an engineering conversation rather than a toxicology one.

Flammability in context

Hydrogen is flammable in air above roughly 4% concentration. Consumer devices deliver hundreds to a few thousand millilitres per minute into an ordinary room, and hydrogen is so light it disperses upward and away almost immediately.

The sensible precautions are the obvious ones: run the machine in a normally ventilated room, don't operate it in a sealed cupboard or tent, and keep open flames away from the outlet. Mixed-gas machines, which output hydrogen and oxygen together, deserve additional caution precisely because both halves of a combustible mixture leave the same port.

Device-level safety

This is where certification matters. CE, FCC and RoHS marks cover electrical safety, emissions and restricted substances for the hardware. Interlocks, over-temperature protection and water-level detection are what stop an appliance from operating in an unsafe state.

Gas purity belongs in this list too: knowing what is in the stream is part of knowing the device is behaving. Sensible operating practice

Use distilled water only in inhalation systems. Replace cannulas and filters on schedule. Keep the humidifier bottle clean. Don't leave a machine running unattended overnight beyond its rated duty cycle, and don't modify the gas path.

For bath systems, the same discipline applies to circulation cleanliness and electrical isolation around water — follow the installation instructions rather than improvising the plumbing.
