PEM/SPE pure-water electrolysis technology
Short answer
PEM/SPE electrolysis splits pure water across a solid polymer electrolyte membrane so hydrogen forms on one side and oxygen on the other, which allows the two gases to be separated without using a liquid chemical electrolyte such as potassium hydroxide.
PEM stands for proton exchange membrane and SPE for solid polymer electrolyte — two names for the same membrane principle. It is the electrolysis architecture used across the Hydrogen Machines bathing, inhalation and water range.
How the cell works
A voltage is applied across a membrane-electrode assembly. Water is oxidized at the anode, producing oxygen and protons; the protons migrate through the solid polymer membrane to the cathode, where they combine with electrons to form hydrogen gas.
Because the membrane itself carries the charge, the cell does not need dissolved ions in the water to conduct — which is why pure water can be used.
Why no chemical electrolyte
Alkaline electrolysis relies on a liquid electrolyte such as potassium hydroxide (KOH) to move charge. PEM/SPE removes that requirement, so there is no caustic solution to mix, top up or dispose of.
Removing the electrolyte also removes an ingredient from the output path, which is why PEM/SPE systems can specify high hydrogen purity.
Separation of hydrogen and oxygen
Because hydrogen and oxygen are generated on opposite faces of the membrane, they can be kept in separate flow paths. Dedicated hydrogen inhalation systems deliver the hydrogen stream and vent the oxygen stream.
Water input and maintenance
PEM/SPE cells are sensitive to dissolved solids, so the water specification in the product manual matters: distilled or purified water for inhalation reservoirs, and filtered or RO water where a system is plumbed in.
Maintenance is largely water quality management plus routine cleaning, rather than electrolyte handling.
