Membrane technology
A PEM/SPE cell uses a solid polymer electrolyte membrane that conducts protons, so the water itself does not need dissolved ions to carry charge. Non-PEM designs — most commonly alkaline cells — use a liquid electrolyte such as potassium hydroxide to conduct between electrodes.
