Myth: “medical-grade hydrogen”

There is no consumer device classification called medical-grade. Where the phrase appears in this market it is doing rhetorical work — borrowing the authority of clinical settings for a wellness appliance.

We do not use it, and we would suggest treating it as a signal to check what the vendor can actually document: a named test laboratory, a report number, a stated method.

Myth: bigger mL/min always means more hydrogen

Only if the figure refers to separated hydrogen. Mixed-gas machines output hydrogen and oxygen together in roughly a 2:1 volume ratio, so about a third of the quoted flow is oxygen.

Two machines quoting the same number can therefore deliver materially different hydrogen volumes. The spec is incomplete without the composition.

Myth: hydrogen water and alkaline water are the same

They are not related. Alkaline water marketing is about pH; hydrogen-rich water is about a dissolved gas. A water can be alkaline with negligible dissolved hydrogen, or neutral with meaningful dissolved hydrogen.

The conflation persists because some ionisers incidentally generate hydrogen. If dissolved hydrogen is what you want, specify and measure dissolved hydrogen.

Myth: bottled hydrogen water holds its concentration

Dissolved hydrogen escapes fast once water meets air, and faster when warm or agitated. Any figure printed on a bottle describes a measurement made at some point in the past under conditions you cannot see.

Generation on demand sidesteps the whole argument: make it, drink it.

Myth: a tablet is equivalent to a machine

Tablets generate hydrogen through a chemical reaction and leave reaction by-products in the water. Electrolysis adds hydrogen to water using electricity and leaves nothing behind. Whatever one thinks of either approach, they are not the same product doing the same thing.

The relevant comparison is by-products, repeatability and cost per session — not a single peak concentration figure.

The honest position

Research on molecular hydrogen is genuinely interesting and genuinely early. Study sizes are often small and results are frequently preliminary. Anyone telling you the science is settled is overselling in one direction; anyone telling you it is worthless is overselling in the other.
