Generation, then dissolution

A bath system does two jobs. First it generates hydrogen by electrolysis, the same chemistry used in an inhaler. Second — and this is the harder engineering problem — it gets that hydrogen to dissolve into a large volume of warm water rather than bubbling straight out of it.

Warm water holds less dissolved gas than cold, and a bath has a large open surface. So the design question is not “how much hydrogen can we make” but “how much of it stays in solution while someone is in the tub”.

Why bubble size and circulation matter

Large bubbles rise fast and vent at the surface. Fine bubbles have far more surface area per unit volume and a much slower rise, so they spend longer in contact with water and dissolve more completely.

Circulation does the rest. Drawing water through the unit and returning it distributes hydrogen through the whole bath instead of concentrating it around a single diffuser, which is what makes a reading taken at one end of the tub meaningful for the whole tub.

Reading ppb figures honestly

Dissolved hydrogen in bathwater is quoted in parts per billion. Any single number is a snapshot: it depends on water temperature, bath volume, run time before entry and whether the system keeps circulating during the soak.

The useful comparison is therefore concentration at a stated volume and time, not a bare peak figure. A number without a volume attached tells you almost nothing.

What a bathing session involves

In practice you fill the bath, run the system for a priming period, then soak while it continues to circulate. The water looks faintly milky at first as fine bubbles disperse. There is no smell and nothing is added chemically — the hydrogen comes from the water itself.

Session length is usually driven by comfort and water temperature rather than by the machine. Home, spa, resort and hot-tub installations differ mainly in plumbing and duty cycle.

Home versus commercial installs

A home unit sits beside the bath and handles one tub. Spa and resort installations run far longer daily hours, are often plumbed in, and need service access designed in from the start.
