Hydrogen alone vs combined H₂ + O₂ output
Short answer
A hydrogen-only figure states the volume of hydrogen delivered per minute, while a combined H₂ + O₂ figure states hydrogen and oxygen together, so a combined number is always larger for the same cell and cannot be compared directly with a hydrogen-only number.
Flow-rate confusion is the most common source of error when US buyers compare hydrogen devices. The number on the box only means something once you know which gases it counts.
Why the two figures differ
Water electrolysis produces hydrogen and oxygen in a 2:1 volume ratio. A device that reports combined output is therefore reporting roughly one and a half times the hydrogen-only figure for the same cell.
Neither reporting convention is dishonest on its own; the problem arises when two devices are compared without checking the basis of each figure.
How to read a specification
Look for an explicit statement such as 'H₂ output' or 'H₂ + O₂ combined'. Where a datasheet does not say, treat the figure as unverified until the manufacturer confirms the basis.
- Check whether the figure is H2-only or combined
- Check the measurement conditions and duty cycle
- Check purity specification and how it was determined
Purity claims
Purity figures should state what was measured and under what conditions. Independent laboratory reports are the strongest form of that evidence because the measurement is not self-reported.
