Hydrogen inhalation vs mixed-gas devices
Short answer
Dedicated hydrogen inhalation devices separate hydrogen from oxygen and deliver hydrogen only, while mixed-gas devices deliver hydrogen and oxygen together in the ratio produced by electrolysis; the difference is gas separation, not the electrolysis reaction itself.
Water electrolysis always produces hydrogen and oxygen. What distinguishes device categories is whether the two gases are separated before delivery, and what membrane and cell architecture is used to achieve that.
Output composition
A separated-output device routes hydrogen to the delivery line and vents oxygen. A mixed-gas device delivers both gases together, which is why the output is described as oxyhydrogen or, colloquially, Brown's gas.
Neither description is a quality judgement — they are different engineering categories with different specification sheets.
Membrane and cell architecture
PEM/SPE cells use a solid polymer membrane and pure water, so no liquid chemical electrolyte such as potassium hydroxide is required. Many mixed-gas designs use a non-PEM cell with an electrolyte solution.
Membrane type affects purity specification, maintenance routine and consumables.
Reading a specification sheet
When comparing devices, check whether a quoted flow figure refers to hydrogen only or to combined hydrogen plus oxygen, because a combined figure is not directly comparable with a hydrogen-only figure.
