Definition
Residue refers to the spent reactive material — undissolved fragments, cloudiness, film or sediment — left in the water after a hydrogen tablet has finished reacting.
Warning: reactive material degrades
Residue is the visible evidence of the tablet degrading. The same breakdown that produces the gas can also leave trace contaminants, including heavy metals, in solution.
Compared to SPE/PEM electrolysis
Electrolysis leaves no residue because nothing is consumed into the water: the hydrogen comes from the water itself, split at the membrane.
- Tablets: spent material, film or sediment possible
- Electrolysis: no dissolving material, no residue
- Tablets: water composition changes as the pellet breaks down
- Electrolysis: water composition unchanged apart from dissolved H₂
