Definition
A hydrogen tablet is a compressed pellet of reactive material — typically elemental magnesium combined with a food acid — that begins reacting the moment it is dropped into water, releasing a fixed burst of hydrogen gas until the pellet is consumed.
Warning: reactive material degrades
The reaction only proceeds by degrading the tablet itself. As the reactive material breaks down it disperses into the water, and tablet manufacturers acknowledge this can leave trace contaminants — including heavy metals — behind.
Compared to SPE/PEM electrolysis
SPE/PEM electrolysis splits purified water at a solid polymer membrane. Nothing dissolves, nothing is consumed into the water, and hydrogen output is continuous rather than a single burst.
